Frequently asked questions

Can I use SHA-256 to store passwords?

Not on its own. Use a slow password hash such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 with a unique salt; plain SHA-256 is too fast to resist guessing.

Why does my hash differ from another tool's?

Hashes change with any difference in input: a trailing newline, spaces or a different text encoding. This tool hashes the exact UTF-8 text you paste.

Is it free, and is my data uploaded?

It's free with no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser — your input is never sent to our servers.
